Description

Globe-Wernicke Oak File Cabinet – 4 Drawer, c.1900

This early 20th-century solid oak file cabinet was manufactured by the Globe-Wernicke Co., one of America’s leading producers of office furniture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The cabinet features a tall, vertical configuration with four letter-size file drawers, built for efficient professional use. Each drawer retains its original pull handles, thumb latches, and label holders, with hardware that appears to be brass or brass-finished metal.

The cabinet was sold by John R. Rembert & Co. of New Haven, Connecticut, as indicated by the original interior brass plaque. John R. Rembert (1853–1913) was a documented New Haven businessman and proprietor of a stationery and office supply firm established in the late 1890s. Period records show his company acted as a regional agent for office furnishings, including Globe-Wernicke filing systems, making this cabinet a strong example of early dealer-distributed office furniture.

Inside, the drawers retain original file folders and dividers, with A–Z guides in the top and bottom drawers, including GUSSCO-marked components labeled “Made in U.S.A.” The pronounced oak grain, robust construction, and intact filing system make this a desirable and functional survivor from the golden age of American office design.

Condition

In good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Condition issues include stains and paint splatter on the left side, an old scorch or burn mark on the right side, and general surface wear throughout. The cabinet remains sturdy and functional, with drawers opening and closing properly. Hardware shows age-appropriate patina.
