Description

Arnoldus Gruter Abstract Linocut, 1967 — Signed & Framed

Striking mid-century abstract linocut by Arnoldus Gruter (Dutch, 1930–2015), pencil-signed “a Gruter” at the center right and dated ’67. This hand-pulled print showcases Gruter’s signature interplay of geometric and curvilinear forms in black, ochre, and violet tones against a cream background. The composition’s rhythmic energy and layered precision highlight Gruter’s command of relief printmaking and his refined modernist aesthetic.

Presented matted behind glass in a wood frame, the piece embodies the bold experimentation and graphic balance characteristic of 1960s European abstraction. A powerful and authentic example of Gruter’s print work, suitable for collectors of modern European art and mid-century design.

Artist Biography:

Arnoldus “Arnold” Gruter (1930–2015) was a Dutch-born artist, sculptor, and printmaker celebrated for his distinctive modernist vision. After emigrating to North America, he served as Artist-in-Residence at Mankato State College (now Minnesota State University, Mankato), where he influenced a generation of artists. Working across sculpture, printmaking, and public art, Gruter explored the tension between abstraction and symbolic form. His notable works include the large-scale Waves sculpture at Minnesota State University. Gruter remained active throughout his career, leaving a lasting legacy in mid-century modern art and education.

Condition:

Good overall condition. The print surface and colors remain vivid and stable. The interior of the glass requires cleaning. Frame exhibits light wear consistent with age; mat shows mild toning. No visible tears, stains, or foxing to the print.
