Samurai Warrior Satsuma Vase — Hand-Painted Moriage, 15.5"
Japanese Satsuma-style earthenware vase, dating to the late Meiji–early Taisho period (circa 1890–1920). Finely hand-painted with a vivid samurai battle scene on one side and floral motifs on the reverse, this piece exemplifies traditional Satsuma craftsmanship. The cream-colored crackle-glazed body features raised moriage enamel decoration and gilt highlights, complemented by applied dragon-form handles.
This style of pottery, prized for its intricate overglaze enamels and intentional crackling, was produced for export during Japan’s decorative arts boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Standing approximately 15.5 inches tall, it represents the vibrant artistry and narrative detail characteristic of Satsuma ware—a striking collector’s piece and display accent.
Condition
Good overall condition with fine, even crazing throughout consistent with age. Light wear to gilding and enamel in raised areas; no visible cracks or repairs. Presents beautifully with strong color and intricate detailing.
