Artist Biography — James Belton Bonsall (1926–1999)

James Belton Bonsall was an American painter associated with the New Orleans and Gulf Coast art scene. Born in Grand Chenier, Louisiana, Bonsall’s early exposure to art came through his family before he served in World War II and later studied fine art at Louisiana State University. His multifaceted career spanned newspaper illustration, set design, and acting before he returned to painting full time.

By the 1950s, Bonsall had become a noted figure within the French Quarter art community, producing a prolific body of work that included landscapes, still lifes, and abstractions in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and casein. His expressive use of color and dynamic compositions reflect both mid-century modern and regionalist sensibilities. Bonsall remained active throughout his life, leaving behind a legacy of vivid, emotionally charged works that celebrate the natural and cultural beauty of the American South.
