Harry Benjamin Signed Mimbres Style Pottery Plate, Lizard, 1990
Hand-coiled and hand-painted Mimbres style pottery plate by prominent Southwestern artist Harry Benjamin, signed and dated “Benjamin ’90” on the underside. The interior features a dynamic stylized lizard form, rendered in black on a warm cream ground, with the body filled in intricate geometric patterning typical of Mimbres-inspired design. The elongated, curving composition creates a strong sense of movement and visual rhythm, framed by a bold black rim.
Harry Benjamin was a foundational figure in the Silver City, New Mexico art community, serving as the original curator of the Silver City Museum and operating What’s a Pot Shop beginning in 1982. Awarded the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2008, Benjamin is widely recognized for translating ancient Southwestern visual traditions into contemporary ceramic and painted works. This plate represents his mature, late 20th-century ceramic output and is well suited for collectors of modern Mimbres-style pottery.
Condition
In good condition overall, with some light shelf wear consistent with display and handling. No remarkable damage, cracks, or repairs observed. The painted decoration remains intact.
