George II Sterling Silver Salver by Richard Rugg, London 1756
A fine George II solid sterling silver footed salver, hallmarked for London, 1756, by Richard Rugg. The piece features a shaped, gadrooned rim and stands on three hoofed scroll feet. The center bears a finely engraved armorial crest. Hallmarks include the date letter “D” (1756), lion passant (sterling standard), leopard’s head crowned (London), and maker’s mark “R.R” for Richard Rugg.
Richard Rugg I registered his maker’s mark in London in 1754 and was active through the 1760s, specializing in finely crafted salvers, waiters, and small trays typical of the mid-Georgian period. His work exemplifies the restrained elegance and skilled silversmithing of the era, often characterized by balanced proportions and decorative gadrooning. Pieces by Rugg are represented in both private and institutional silver collections, reflecting the enduring appeal of his craftsmanship.
