Josefina Aguilar Oaxaca Clay Figure – Virgen de Guadalupe & Devil, Signed
Expressive hand-crafted and hand-painted clay figure by Josefina Aguilar (b. 1945) of Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca, Mexico. The sculpture portrays a woman carrying on her head a radiant shrine of the Virgen de Guadalupe, surrounded by flowers, cacti, and golden rays, while holding a small red devil in one arm and a circular clay plaque inscribed Josefina Aguilar in the other. This juxtaposition of sacred and playful imagery reflects Aguilar’s distinctive storytelling style—capturing both faith and human folly in colorful, humorous balance.
Josefina Aguilar is one of Mexico’s most celebrated folk artists, famed for her narrative clay muñecas that depict Oaxacan life, religion, and folklore. Trained in her family’s pottery tradition, Aguilar gained international recognition in the 1970s when collector Nelson Rockefeller discovered her work. Her figures now appear in major museum collections, including the Museum of International Folk Art (Santa Fe) and the Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin). This signed example embodies her hallmark artistry: vivid color, expressive modeling, and rich cultural symbolism.
A beautifully preserved and authentic piece of Oaxacan folk art representing faith, temptation, and devotion—themes central to Aguilar’s enduring legacy.
