Description

Mata Ortiz Pottery Vase – Miguel Quezada Signed

This hand-coiled and hand-painted Mata Ortiz pottery vase is signed on the underside by Miguel E. Quezada, a contemporary ceramic artist working within the renowned Mata Ortiz tradition of northern Chihuahua, Mexico. Measuring 5 inches high by 4 inches in diameter, the vessel features a rounded, balanced form accented by a flared neck. Warm terracotta tones are contrasted with a darker upper section and finely executed cream-colored geometric and abstract motifs inspired by ancient Paquimé (Casas Grandes) designs.

Miguel E. Quezada is part of the extended Quezada family lineage that helped establish Mata Ortiz as one of the most important modern pottery movements in the Americas. Artists in this tradition work entirely by hand—without a wheel or molds—using locally sourced clay and mineral pigments. Each piece is individually fired and painted, resulting in subtle variations that make every example unique.

This vase is an excellent representation of Mata Ortiz craftsmanship, offering both cultural significance and strong visual appeal for collectors of Mexican folk art and contemporary ceramics.
