Jerry Sisneros Santa Clara Pueblo Black-on-Black Pottery Jar — Hand Coiled & Painted, Feather Motif
This elegant black-on-black pottery jar by Jerry Sisneros (1946–2017), Santa Clara Pueblo, reflects the deep artistic heritage of northern New Mexico’s renowned Pueblo potters. Hand-coiled and hand-painted, the vessel displays a striking interplay of polished and matte surfaces in a stylized feather and lightning motif — a visual hallmark of Santa Clara ceramic tradition. The jet-black finish, achieved through the Pueblo’s signature reduction-firing technique, highlights the artist’s skill in balancing precision and organic form.
A respected member of the Sisneros family of potters, Jerry Sisneros continued the lineage of traditional Pueblo craftsmanship into the late 20th century, blending ancestral methods with modern refinement. His works are held in private collections and appear in Native art markets and galleries across the Southwest. Signed on the underside “Jerry Sisneros, Santa Clara.”
An exceptional piece of Native American artistry — equally at home in a fine art collection or as a refined accent in modern interiors.
Condition:
Good condition, with minor shelf wear to the base and faint surface marks consistent with display. No cracks or repairs noted. The polish remains strong, and the matte painted motifs are crisp and well-preserved.
