Candelaria Suazo Santa Clara Mini Blackware Pot
This miniature blackware pottery vessel is signed by Candelaria Suazo of Santa Clara Pueblo, a respected contemporary Native American potter from a well-documented family of Pueblo artists. Hand coiled and traditionally fired, the piece features finely hand-etched sgraffito decoration depicting a stylized hummingbird, rendered in bold geometric forms. The hummingbird is a meaningful Pueblo symbol often associated with joy, balance, and harmony, while the avanyu represents water and life.
The highly polished black surface was achieved through a traditional reduction firing process characteristic of Santa Clara Pueblo pottery. Despite its small scale, the vessel shows excellent control, crisp carving, and strong visual balance. Signed on the underside, this piece is a fine example of contemporary Santa Clara craftsmanship and an appealing addition to any Native American pottery collection.
