Description

Globe-Wernicke Grade 299 Oak Barrister Bookcase – 5-Section Modular Unit

Early 20th-century Globe-Wernicke Co. Grade 299 barrister bookcase, manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio. This example is constructed in solid quarter-sawn oak with rich tiger-grain figuring and fitted with the company’s patented “elastic” modular system. The unit separates into five sections—including a C-Ex top, D-Ex base, and three glazed bookcase tiers (sizes C11 and D12¼)—each maker-marked with original factory labels.

The bookcase features glass-front lift doors, brass banding, and interlocking hardware that allow for easy transport and versatile reconfiguration. Designed for libraries and law offices of the period, Globe-Wernicke’s Grade 299 line represented a premium offering in their catalog, prized for its refined materials and precise joinery. This piece embodies early 20th-century Arts & Crafts craftsmanship and remains a functional, collectible classic suitable for books, curios, or office display.

Condition

Good condition overall, showing moderate surface scuffs, a few small paint specks, and typical age-related wear. The glass panels and sectional lift mechanisms are fully operational. Brass fittings show light oxidation consistent with age, and the structure is sound and stable. See photos for complete visual reference.
