Doña Rosa Barro Negro Cat Sculpture— Signed, San Bartolo Coyotepec
Handmade barro negro cat sculpture from the celebrated Doña Rosa workshop of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. The reclining feline shows the studio’s signature lively modeling—rounded eyes, tilted head, and tucked paws—finished in a deep, mirrorlike sheen. Underside is inscribed: “Doña Rosa Coyotepec / Oaxaca, Mex.”
Doña Rosa (Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto, 1900–1980) revolutionized local pottery in the mid-20th century by meticulously burnishing near-dry clay—traditionally with a smooth stone—before reduction firing to achieve the lustrous black surface now synonymous with Coyotepec. Pieces from her family workshop, especially figural animals, are treasured for their charm and for the lineage they represent in Oaxacan ceramics. A captivating accent for folk-art and Mexican pottery collections.
Condition
Very Good: no remarkable damage observed; light handling and tiny firing/handmade irregularities typical of barro negro. Surface retains an attractive gloss. Please see photos.
