Hudson’s Bay Co. 1670 Scotch Whisky Wooden Shipping Crate
This authentic vintage wooden shipping crate is branded Hudson’s Bay Company 1670 Scotch Whisky, displaying bold black stenciling, the Hudson’s Bay crest, and strong mid-century commercial typography. The “1670” refers to Hudson’s Bay Company’s founding year under Royal Charter and was used on its private-label spirits during the post-Prohibition era. Constructed from solid softwood planks with nailed joints, the crate was manufactured to transport 12 bottles (2.4 American gallons) of Scotch whisky.
Markings include “Product of Scotland,” “Gross Weight 41 Lbs,” and a Washington State Liquor Control Board consignee label listing Permit No. I-572, Code No. 322C, and importer Charles Gilkey, Seattle, Wash. These regulatory details firmly date the crate to circa 1945–1960, during the peak period of Hudson’s Bay Company’s U.S. spirits distribution. The “1670” Scotch Whisky brand was discontinued by the mid-to-late 1970s, making this crate a surviving artifact from a now-defunct Hudson’s Bay liquor line.
With its confirmed mid-20th-century origin, discontinued branding, and original commercial markings, this crate holds strong appeal for collectors of whisky memorabilia, advertising, and Hudson’s Bay Company history, as well as for distinctive rustic bar or retail décor.
