Mid-20th Century Mexican Tonalá-Style Hand-Painted Pottery Tea Set – Folk Art Figures & Fish Motif
Charming five-piece Mexican pottery tea set, featuring a teapot and four matching handled mugs, each hand-painted in the distinctive mid-century Tonalá-style folk tradition. The cream-toned glaze is bordered in cobalt blue and decorated with vibrant rural scenes — figures in sombreros amid cactus and agave plants — while the teapot displays a whimsical blue and green fish motif. The rustic charm, brushwork, and soft glaze tone are characteristic of Jalisco and Puebla ceramics made for export during the 1950s–1970s. Each mug is impressed “Mexico” on the underside.
An appealing example of Mexican folk art pottery, this set captures the warmth and individuality of hand-crafted wares from mid-20th century Mexico — ideal for collectors of vintage Latin American ceramics or as a colorful decorative accent.
Condition:
Good overall condition with some previously touched-up areas and minor loss to finish. Light glaze crazing and small imperfections consistent with handmade mid-century Mexican pottery. Colors remain bright and appealing, with no major cracks or structural damage noted.
Dimensions:
- Mugs (each): 2 x 3½ x 4¼ in.
- Teapot: 4½ x 7 x 4¼ in.
