Ithaca Calendar Clock Co. “No. 8 Shelf Library” Double-Dial Clock, ca. 1875
An elegant and mechanically ingenious “No. 8 Shelf Library” double-dial calendar clock by the Ithaca Calendar Clock Company, Ithaca, New York, circa 1875–1890. Designed under H. B. Horton’s patents of 1865 and 1866, this model integrates a perpetual calendar mechanism that automatically advances the day, date, and month — a remarkable feat of American horology.
The clock’s solid walnut case, crafted in a refined shelf or mantel form, features molded trim, burled veneer panels, and an arched crest typical of the company’s late Victorian style. The upper dial displays Roman numerals for timekeeping, while the lower dial, signed “Ithaca Calendar Clock Co., Ithaca, N.Y.”, reveals calendar rollers through graceful cutouts. Both dials are encircled by original brass bezels, framing the paper faces aged to a warm, authentic patina.
Fitted with an 8-day brass movement, this model was prized for reliability and elegance, bridging art and innovation in the post-Civil War era. Today, the No. 8 remains a sought-after collector’s model — less frequently encountered than the company’s smaller parlor clocks, yet equally admired for its balance of form and function.
Condition
Good overall with age-appropriate wear. Pendulum absent. Visible cracking to dial faces and cracked lower glass. Mechanism runs briefly when wound. The walnut case remains solid, showing light finish wear and a pleasing aged surface. Maker’s markings clearly visible on lower dial.
