Description

Douglas E. Taylor Cactus Triad Limited Edition Etching (22/50, 1984)

Limited edition etching by Douglas E. Taylor titled Cactus Triad, numbered 22/50 and pencil-signed lower right. Created in 1984, this finely executed print depicts a trio of clustered barrel cacti rendered in earthy ochres, muted greens, and soft blues. Taylor’s delicate control of tone and texture captures the intricate spines and subtle curvature of the plants, evoking the quiet resilience of desert life. Titled at the lower center and numbered lower left.

The print is double matted, framed under glass in a brushed metal frame, and remains an excellent example of Taylor’s mid-career etchings exploring organic forms through layered surface techniques. A visually calming and technically adept composition that balances realism and abstraction beautifully.

Artist Biography:

Douglas E. Taylor is an American contemporary artist and poet based in Portland, Oregon, widely recognized for his mastery of printmaking and mixed-media processes. Holding an MFA in Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis, Taylor has worked for decades across multiple print disciplines, including etching, monotype, collagraph, and relief.

His work often reflects the textures and rhythms of the natural world—botanical forms, landscapes, and wildlife rendered with subtle tonal transitions and a deep respect for organic structure. Since the 1970s, Taylor has exhibited extensively throughout the western United States and has taught printmaking at both university and community levels. His pieces reside in numerous private and regional collections.

Cactus Triad exemplifies Taylor’s early exploration of desert-inspired imagery, where technical precision and meditative composition merge into a harmonious visual statement.
