Description

Hewlett-Packard Sprague Rappaport Stethoscope – Waltham, MA, Vintage Dual-Head

A vintage Hewlett-Packard Sprague Rappaport stethoscope, manufactured in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. This dual-head acoustic stethoscope features a precision-engineered chrome-plated chestpiece with clear diaphragm, engraved “HEWLETT PACKARD / WALTHAM MASS. U.S.A.” and “SPRAGUE STETHOSCOPE.” The classic Rappaport-Sprague configuration employs dual rubber tubes for enhanced sound isolation—an enduring design favored by physicians and cardiologists throughout the mid-20th century.

Hewlett-Packard’s medical instruments division, active from the 1950s through the 1970s, was renowned for high-fidelity diagnostic equipment prior to its later transition into HP’s broader medical technology line (later acquired by Philips Medical Systems). This example captures the company’s commitment to acoustic precision and mechanical craftsmanship. An appealing addition for collectors of vintage medical instruments or for museum and educational display.

Condition

In good vintage condition, showing light oxidation and surface wear to the tubing consistent with age and use. Metal components retain a bright, reflective finish with minor patina. Ear tips and diaphragms appear intact though aged. Offered as a collectible or display item only, not for clinical use.

Dimensions

Approximate length: 30 inches (fully extended)
Tubing diameter: 0.4 inch each

Provenance & Notes

Produced during the late 1950s–1970s, this stethoscope represents one of Hewlett-Packard’s early medical engineering achievements before their focus shifted toward advanced diagnostic systems. Comparable examples have appeared in museum collections and medical history archives.
