Heller Flatware by Massimo Vignelli — 63-Piece Color Handle Set, 1970s
Iconic 63-piece flatware set designed by Massimo and Lella Vignelli for Heller, produced in Japan circa the 1970s. This set pairs brushed stainless steel utensils with boldly colored molded handles in red, yellow, and ivory — a hallmark of the Vignellis’ modernist philosophy combining clarity, function, and visual rhythm.
Each piece is stamped “Stainless Steel Japan”, consistent with period Heller production, and designed to complement the Vignelli Heller dinnerware system both visually and philosophically.
Set Includes (63 Pieces)
• (15) Teaspoons
• (12) Soup Spoons
• (12) Salad Forks
• (12) Dinner Forks
• (12) Steak Knives
Total: 63 pieces
Design & Historical Significance
• Designed as part of the Vignellis’ broader vision of complete table systems, integrating flatware seamlessly with dinnerware and glassware
• Reflects the Vignelli belief that “design is one” — the same principles apply to typography, furniture, and utensils
• Produced during the height of post-war modernism, when functional objects were elevated to sculptural forms
• The color-blocked handles serve both aesthetic and practical purposes, offering visual order and easy identification at the table
• Closely associated with the celebrated Heller “Max” dinnerware, now held in major museum collections including MoMA
• Increasingly difficult to find in large, mixed-color sets, making this lot especially desirable for collectors and designers
Materials & Construction
• Stainless steel blades, tines, and bowls
• Molded synthetic handles in red, yellow, and ivory
• Balanced weight with gently tapered handles for comfortable use
• Steak knives feature subtly serrated edges
Condition
Good overall condition with vibrant color throughout. Stainless steel shows light surface wear and faint scratches consistent with normal use. Handles remain glossy with no cracks observed. No bent or broken pieces noted. A strong, clean set suitable for use or display.
