Description

Gov. Winthrop Secretary Desk with Glazed Bookcase Hutch

A traditional secretary desk with upper glazed bookcase, featuring shaped glass doors, carved detailing, and a drop-front writing surface over drawers. Raised on cabriole legs with classic early-American styling, the piece offers both display space above and practical storage and writing function below. The writing interior includes compartments suited to letters, stationery, or small valuables, while the upper cabinet provides shelving for books or decorative objects.

This desk carries the kind of presence people look for in a room—part workstation, part showcase—built to be used, noticed, and kept.

Evidence of past repair or reworking is visible to the legs, consistent with restoration addressing earlier loss or damage. Rather than hiding the story, that work reads as part of the piece’s long life: something that was worth preserving and returning to service.

Included is a sales receipt dated March 1, 1996, documenting a purchase price of $1,750 and identifying the piece as a “Gov. Winthrop Secretary.” The receipt is included as documentation of that prior transaction and the identification used at the time.
