Description

Western Flyer “Galaxy Flyer” Bicycle — 1960s Red Steel Cruiser, 19" Frame

Vintage Western Flyer “Galaxy Flyer” men’s bicycle, produced for Western Auto Stores circa the 1960s. A classic American cruiser, this model features a red steel cantilever frame, chrome fenders, and period “WF” and “Galaxy Flyer” decals. The bicycle bears the Western Flyer head badge, confirming its maker’s mark and retail origin. Its sculpted frame, chain guard, and star-pattern graphics capture the space-age styling popular in mid-century design.

Western Flyer bicycles were sold exclusively through Western Auto, which contracted top U.S. manufacturers such as Murray-Ohio and Huffman to produce their bikes under private label. The Galaxy Flyer represents one of the store’s distinctive models from that era—valued today for its nostalgic design, sturdy steel construction, and authentic Americana appeal.

This example retains its original seat and pedals and has been fitted with new 22-inch tires for functionality and display. A fine addition for collectors, vintage bicycle enthusiasts, or mid-century decor displays.

Condition:

Good overall vintage condition with chipped paint, surface oxidation, and age-appropriate wear. The chrome elements show light pitting but remain bright. The saddle exhibits surface wear and fading. Frame is straight and solid, and both new tires roll smoothly. Overall, an attractive, complete example ideal for restoration or period display.

Dimensions:

  • Frame Size: 19 inches
  • Tire Size: 22 inches diameter (new replacements)
  • Construction: Steel frame with chrome fenders

A note from James:
The Western Flyer line was introduced in 1931 by Western Auto Supply Co. and produced through the late 1990s. The Galaxy Flyer name was among their 1960s–70s space-themed series, reflecting the cultural fascination with the space race and futuristic design. Built by major U.S. manufacturers to Western Auto specifications, these bicycles are now regarded as iconic mid-century cruisers and desirable collectibles.
