Antique Saxony Spinning Wheel, Solid Wood & Iron
This antique Saxony-style spinning wheel dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and represents a refined example of traditional domestic textile craftsmanship. Constructed of solid hardwood with turned legs and uprights, the wheel features a horizontal drive wheel, treadle-powered mechanism, and a complete flyer-and-bobbin assembly. Original iron hardware secured with flathead screws reflects period-appropriate construction and later 19th-century manufacturing practices.
Saxony wheels originated in Central Europe and became widely used in German and German-influenced regions of the United States, prized for their efficiency in spinning wool and flax. This example retains its tall distaff post, tensioning system, and properly aligned drive components, and has been fully tested for functionality. The 18-inch drive wheel and compact proportions suggest a household wheel intended for regular use rather than industrial production.
Currently set up as a display piece, the wheel remains appears operational and complete, offering appeal to collectors, reenactors, fiber artists, and admirers of early folk technology. Its honest wear, warm patina, and visible signs of use speak to a long working life, making it both an educational artifact and a visually striking centerpiece.
