Description

Pair of Isleta Pueblo Pottery Vessels, Signed Wero and Jojola, 1975

A pair of Isleta Pueblo pottery vessels, each hand-formed and decorated with traditional geometric motifs. The larger example, signed Wero beneath, displays refined linework and balanced black-and-white design over a rich red-orange slip, showcasing the confident precision of a practiced Pueblo potter. In contrast, the smaller cream-ground bowl, inscribed “Given by Elaine & Elizabeth Jojola, Dec 25, 1975, Isleta”, represents a more primitive or early amateur example, with simplified red and gray block motifs and a rustic hand-painted surface.

Together, the pieces offer an engaging comparison of Pueblo ceramic expression—one mature and stylized, the other more spontaneous and personal—each reflecting Isleta’s enduring pottery traditions of the mid-20th century.

Condition:

Both pieces remain in good overall condition with light surface wear from age. The Wero jar shows minor pigment irregularities and small marks near the painted band. The Jojola bowl exhibits uneven slip application, modest surface rubbing, and paint inconsistency typical of early handmade work. No structural damage noted.

Dimensions:

  • Wero jar: Approx. 5½ in. high

  • Jojola bowl: Approx. 3½ in. high
(Campbell’s soup can shown for scale.)
