Motorola Model X42E All-Transistor AM/FM Portable Radio – Cowhide Case
Vintage Motorola Model X42E all-transistor AM/FM portable radio, c. 1960s. This handsome example features a black genuine top-grain cowhide exterior with stitched edges and a built-in carrying handle. The front face is accented by twin chrome knobs, a vertical tuning dial, and Motorola’s iconic “All Transistor” and “AM–FM” designations. Equipped for dual power operation—120V AC (3 watts) or two 9V batteries—this model represents an early milestone in Motorola’s solid-state portable lineup.
The back panel includes clear schematics for operation and antenna connections, with the telescoping FM antenna extending smoothly. A fine combination of mid-century styling and durable construction, ideal for display or practical vintage use.
Condition:
Good overall and fully functional. Tested and operational, though tuner dial movement has limited range and may require adjustment or service. Exhibits minor wear, including an approximately 1/8" area of surface loss at the top and light edge wear consistent with age. Leather remains supple and well-kept, with intact stitching and clear labeling throughout.
Dimensions:
With handle: 7.25 x 9.5 x 2.5 inches.
