Description

Stephen K. McCullough “Kokopelli Figure” Original Watercolor, 1998

Original watercolor on handmade paper by Stephen K. McCullough, dated April 1998, capturing the artist’s signature petroglyph-inspired imagery. The composition features a stylized Kokopelli figure in motion, surrounded by spiral and geometric forms symbolic of wind, sound, and movement. Earthy sienna, umber, and ochre pigments evoke the texture of ancient canyon walls and desert patina.

Signed lower left “McCullough” and additionally signed and dated verso “4-98.” Professionally framed under glass with double matting and accompanied by the artist’s printed biography from McCullough Fine Arts, Albuquerque, New Mexico. A strong example of McCullough’s late-1990s work exploring Native American heritage through contemporary abstraction.

Artist Biography

Stephen K. McCullough (American, b. 20th Century) is a Native American artist and registered member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Known for his evocative watercolor and acrylic paintings inspired by ancient petroglyphs, McCullough’s works blend symbolic imagery with the tonal richness of the desert Southwest. After two decades in the banking industry, he pursued art full-time alongside his twin brother, Michael C. McCullough, also a painter. His art is represented by McCullough Fine Arts in Old Town Albuquerque and other Southwestern galleries.
