Description

Barney Oliver HP Integrated Amplifier, c.1972–73 — Serial 440

Conceived at Hewlett-Packard by HP Labs director Dr. Bernard “Barney” Oliver and built after-hours for employees only, this scarce integrated amplifier marries laboratory discipline with domestic elegance. The signature black faceplate fronts a precision stepped attenuator, selectable HF filters, and an RIAA ±6 dB contour; within, modular plug-in boards, a potted transformer (stamp 5081-0876), generous filter reserves, and complementary Motorola MJ802/MJ4502 outputs speak to its engineering pedigree. This example, Serial 440, comes from an HP employee, aligning directly with the project’s insider provenance. Approximately 400 units were produced at cost for staff—a cult object at the crossroads of HP history and high-fidelity design.

Rated 50 W/ch into 8 Ω (36 W into 16 Ω; 80 W into 4 Ω) with vanishing distortion, and equipped with inputs for Tuner, Tape, Phono, Aux 1/2, the Oliver invites serious listening while rewarding close inspection of its meticulous construction. Speaker connections are 3-pin XLR-style; mains 115/230 VAC, 50–60 Hz with slow-blow fuse as marked. Offered here exactly as found—an exceptional candidate for careful recommissioning or as a display-worthy artifact of early-’70s HP innovation.
