Gerardo Ortega Signed Folk Art Church Retablo Sculpture
Signed and hand sculpted folk art church retablo by Gerardo Ortega, a Mexican folk artist from Tonalá, Jalisco, a region internationally recognized for its long tradition of vibrant pottery and sculptural folk art. The piece depicts a multi-tiered church façade with twin towers topped by crosses, arched openings, and numerous expressive figures arranged throughout the structure. The lively composition is finished in bold, saturated colors including pink, yellow, blue, green, and red, with hand-painted decorative details and a clock motif on one tower.
Ortega’s work is known for its narrative quality, playful figuration, and strong use of color, all of which are clearly present here. Constructed from hand-modeled and painted clay, this sculpture reflects a contemporary interpretation of traditional religious architecture infused with whimsical character. The artist’s signature “Ortega” appears on the front base, confirming authorship. A strong example of collectible Mexican folk art by a documented Tonalá artist.
Condition
In very good condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with hand-crafted folk art. The lower right figure has a previous repair to the arm. Minor paint wear and small surface scuffs are present, primarily along edges and raised details. Structurally sound and displays well.
