Susi Nagoda Bergquist, San Mateo Folk Art Retablo
Hand sculpted and painted folk art retablo depicting San Mateo (Saint Matthew), created by Native American artist Susi Nagoda Bergquist. The stoneware figure is shown holding a book and standing within a carved wooden niche, accompanied by symbolic elements including a money bag marked with a dollar sign, small vessels, and a bird. The base is inscribed “San Mateo” on the front.
The reverse bears a handwritten inscription reading “Patron of Business, Banking, Adccountants & Making Money” and is signed and dated Susi Nagoda Bergquist, 1978. Bergquist’s work is recognized for its narrative approach, blending symbolism, folklore, and everyday themes into expressive mixed-media figures. Constructed of stoneware and wood, this retablo reflects her 1970s output, with textured surfaces, muted coloration, and clear thematic intent. A signed and dated example illustrating her interest in occupational and domestic patron figures.
Condition
In good condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with age and handmade construction. Noted is an approximately 0.5" imperfection on the money bag. No major cracks, repairs, or structural issues observed.
