Description

1949 Lane Cedar Hope Chest Style, Model 2268

This vintage Lane Cedar Hope Chest, Style No. 2268, was manufactured by the Lane Company in Altavista, Virginia, and dates to November 18, 1949, based on the factory serial number (948111) using Lane’s documented serial-number dating method. This places the chest firmly in the post–World War II, early mid-century period, during Lane’s peak production years.

Clearly maker marked, the chest retains its original interior labels, patent stampings, promotional materials, and the original Lane key in its original envelope, all of which strengthen authenticity and collector appeal. Constructed with solid wood and veneers, the exterior features a warm walnut-toned finish with bold diagonal veneer panels and a shaped base typical of late-1940s Lane designs.

The interior is fully cedar lined and remains aromatic, reflecting Lane’s pressure-tested, aroma-tight construction developed for moth protection. A removable interior tray with felt bottom is included. The lid seals properly, confirming continued functionality. A classic and practical Lane chest with documented provenance, suitable for use or collection.

Condition

In good vintage condition. The chest is sturdy and seals well. Finish wear is present throughout, consistent with age and use. Chipped veneer is noted at the lower left side corner and at the top right corner of the lid. Interior cedar is clean and smells of cedar. Original labels and paperwork show age-appropriate wear but remain intact and legible.
