Antique American Spindle-Back Rocking Chair w/ Cane Seat & Brass Bands
This antique American spindle-back rocking chair dates to the late 19th century, reflecting Windsor-influenced design popular during the Victorian to Colonial Revival transition. The chair features a tall, slender back with turned spindles and a gently arched crest rail, accented at the shoulders with decorative brass bands that add visual distinction and period character.
Constructed from dark-stained hardwood, likely maple or birch, the chair displays turned legs, stretchers, and smoothly shaped rockers that provide a balanced and comfortable rocking motion. The rectangular framed cane seat is consistent with chairs of this type and era and complements the overall form. While not a true 18th-century Windsor, the piece draws on earlier American traditions while incorporating later decorative and structural elements typical of regional workshop production.
An attractive and authentic example of late 19th-century American seating, well suited for display, traditional interiors, or continued use.
Condition
In good condition, with an old restoration evident, including more recent hardware and replacement caning. The chair is sturdy and structurally sound, showing surface wear, finish variation, and minor marks consistent with age and use. No major cracks or instability observed. Age-appropriate wear throughout.
