Chinese Carved Bone Opium Pipe – Immortals & Dragon Motifs, 18”
A remarkable example of late Qing to early Republic–era craftsmanship, this Chinese carved bone opium pipe captures the elegance and symbolism of its time. The 18-inch stem is intricately hand-carved and polychrome-painted with depictions of three bearded figures, likely representing Daoist Immortals, bringers of wisdom, longevity, and prosperity. Between them, clouds and celestial motifs swirl across the surface, their fine detailing enhanced with subtle pigments of rose, jade, and ebony.
At the heart of the piece rests a darkened metal opium bowl, finely engraved with dragons and auspicious scrollwork, its patina attesting to gentle use and the passage of time. Both ends are capped in dark horn or lacquered wood, lending balance and visual harmony to the bone’s warm tone. Together, these elements form a piece that is as much a work of art as it is a relic of a storied cultural ritual.
Objects such as this were treasured in China’s opium culture of the 19th century—luxurious personal items that reflected both refinement and contemplation. Today, they stand as evocative symbols of artistry, history, and transformation.
