Francis Saint-Marc Papier-Mâché Umbrella Stand — Parisian Scene, c.1950s
Step into a Paris park, circa mid-century: a bonneted lady bargains by a flower cart, a child clutches a doll, and an organ grinder entertains beneath winter trees. This tall papier-mâché cylinder is modeled in low relief and hand painted in soft greens, rose, and cream, then sealed with a glossy varnish. A cursive signature appears near the base, artist likely Francis Saint-Marc. The textured green liner hints at its original purpose—likely an umbrella stand—though it also makes a charming floor vase or entryway cachepot. It’s functional décor with a lesson in decoupage: layered paper, worked in relief, becomes a miniature street scene you can walk around.
Condition
Good overall with honest signs of use; scattered scuffs and creases to the paper skin, light varnish craquelure, and a 2" area of wear noted in photos. Stable and displays well.
Dimensions/Size
17.75 in height x 10 in diameter.
Soup can shown for scale in photos.
