Wm. L. Gilbert Mantel Clock c.1911 — Key & Pendulum, Gong Chime
This antique mantel clock was produced by the Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Company of Winsted, Connecticut, a leading American clockmaker of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The brass movement is clearly maker marked “Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co., Winsted Conn., U.S.A.” and bears the diamond “G” trademark, along with a patent date of April 13, 1896 and a 1911 date mark, placing manufacture firmly in the early 20th century.
The clock is housed in a solid wood case with iron accents, featuring fluted columns, a stepped base, and decorative cast metal feet. It retains its convex glass cover within a hinged brass bezel. The original paper dial displays bold Arabic numerals and decorative black hands, signed “Made in United States of America by Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co.” The twin mainspring movement chimes on both the hour and half hour via a coiled gong. Complete with key and pendulum, this is a classic and authentic example of American mantel clock design from the period.
Condition
Good condition and functional at time of testing. The clock runs briefly but service is required for continued reliable operation. The dial shows fading and discoloration, and the case exhibits age-appropriate wear, including surface scratches and finish wear. Overall presentation remains attractive and complete.
