1980 China 30 Yuan – Silver Proof, Lake Placid Olympics
This is a 1980 People’s Republic of China 30 Yuan silver Proof commemorative coin, issued without a visible mint mark for the Lake Placid Winter Olympic Games.
The obverse depicts a speed skater in forward motion, leaning into the stride with arms swept back, rendered with frosted devices against mirrored fields. The figure is enclosed by a ring of stylized geometric elements and snowflake motifs. The legend “LAKE PLACID 1980” appears along the lower perimeter, with Chinese characters arranged around the design.
The reverse displays the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China, featuring five stars above Tiananmen Gate, encircled by wheat ears and a cogwheel. Below the emblem are the Olympic rings and Chinese characters identifying the issuing authority, with the denomination “30元” positioned near the lower rim. The mirrored fields and sharp, cameo-style relief confirm Proof manufacture. No mint mark is visible on either side.
