1989 United States Silver Eagle – One Dollar, Silver
The 1989 United States Silver Eagle One Dollar, struck in .999 fine silver for bullion investment and authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985.
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, depicting Liberty striding left toward a rising sun, draped in the American flag, with her right arm extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The legend “LIBERTY” encircles, with the date 1989 below and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the right.
The reverse displays John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with outstretched wings behind a shield, clutching an olive branch and arrows. Above the eagle is a triangular arrangement of thirteen stars. The legends read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR.”
The American Silver Eagle program, introduced in 1986, served as the official silver bullion coinage of the United States, providing a federally backed means of holding silver while employing established American numismatic designs.
