1898 Mexico Peso – Silver, Mo AM
1898 Republic of Mexico Peso, struck in silver at the Mexico City Mint.
The obverse features the national eagle standing left upon a cactus, grasping a serpent in its beak and talon, surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel. The legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA encircles, with a beaded border at the rim.
The reverse depicts the Phrygian cap of liberty radiating sunbursts, the word LIBERTAD on the cap’s band, and the inscription UN PESO to left. Below appears the date 1898, followed by the mintmark Mo and assayer initials A.M. A beaded border encloses the design.
This type represents the long-running Mexican peso series that circulated widely in domestic commerce and international trade during the late nineteenth century.
