Description

1912–1927 Republic of China Dollar – Silver, Founding Commemorative

1912–1927 Republic of China One Dollar, struck in silver for general circulation during the formative years of the Republican era, commemorating the founding of the Republic following the fall of the Qing dynasty.

The obverse displays the inscription 中華民國 開國紀念幣 (“Republic of China, Founding Commemorative Coin”) around the periphery. At center is the denomination 壹圓 within a circular medallion, surrounded by a ring of raised pellets and vertical line ornamentation. Small quatrefoil-style ornaments appear at the left and right fields. The design is enclosed by a denticulated border.

The reverse features the denomination 壹圓 arranged around a central floral rosette. Additional Chinese inscriptions denote the traditional weight standard of the silver dollar, reflecting continuity with late Qing monetary conventions. The central devices are enclosed within a beaded circular border, with denticulated rim matching the obverse.

Despite its commemorative legend, this issue was produced primarily as a circulating coinage. Struck over an extended period and likely at multiple mints, it represents a transitional type bridging imperial and Republican monetary systems during a time of political decentralization and reform.
