Description

1912 Republic of China Dollar – Silver, “Birth of the Republic”

1912 Republic of China silver dollar, struck to commemorate the establishment of the Republic following the fall of the Qing dynasty. The coin is denominated One Dollar and was intended as a circulating silver issue during the early Republican period.

The obverse depicts a left-facing bust of Yuan Shikai in military attire. The portrait is enclosed within a beaded inner border, with Chinese characters around the perimeter identifying the Republic of China and the year. Decorative floral elements appear at the sides, integrated into the legend.

The reverse bears the English legend “MEMENTO” above and “BIRTH OF REPUBLIC OF CHINA” below, with “OF REPUBLIC OF CHINA” completing the outer inscription. At center are the Chinese characters for “Republic of China,” arranged vertically within a wreath of grain and floral motifs, all enclosed by a beaded border.

This type was issued during the transitional period of 1912, reflecting the new Republican government’s effort to establish a modern national coinage while appealing to both domestic and international audiences through bilingual inscriptions.
