1900 French Indochina Piastre de Commerce – Silver
1900 French Indochina Piastre de Commerce, struck in silver for commercial circulation within the French colonial territories of Southeast Asia.
The obverse depicts a seated allegorical figure of Liberty facing right, wearing a radiate crown and classical drapery, holding a fasces upright in her right hand and resting her left arm on a tablet. Agricultural motifs appear in the left field, with an anchor at right. The surrounding legend reads REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, with the date 1900 below; the engraver’s signature BARRE appears beneath the exergual line at lower left.
The reverse displays the denomination PIASTRE DE COMMERCE in three lines within a wreath composed of oak and laurel branches, tied at the base with a ribbon over an anchor. The encircling legend reads INDO-CHINE FRANÇAISE, with the fineness 900 POIDS 27 G noted along the lower periphery.
The piastre de commerce was introduced to facilitate regional trade, modeled on contemporary international trade dollars, and circulated widely throughout French Indochina at the turn of the 20th century.
