1960 Mexico Ten Pesos – Silver, Independence Commemorative, Mo
This is a 1960 Mexican United States commemorative issue of ten pesos, struck in silver for circulation, with a visible “Mo” mint mark confirming production at the Mexico City Mint. The piece is presented encapsulated in a protective holder.
The obverse depicts conjoined busts of two key figures in Mexican history, with Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla at left and José María Morelos at right, both facing forward. The surrounding legend reads “INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD,” with the dual dates “1810” and “1960” above the portraits. The names “HIDALGO” and “MADERO” appear adjacent to the respective figures, and the motto “SUFRAGIO EFECTIVO NO REELECCIÓN” is inscribed along the lower periphery.
The reverse displays the national coat of arms of Mexico, showing an eagle standing left upon a prickly pear cactus while grasping a serpent in its beak and talon. The legend “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” encircles the design. The denomination “10 PESOS” appears at right, with the date “1960” below. A clear “Mo” mint mark is present to the left of the eagle, and its placement is fully visible in the provided images.
This issue commemorates the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence and was produced as a legal-tender silver commemorative coin.
