1950 Mexico Cinco Pesos – Silver, Mo Mint
This coin is a 1950 issue of the United Mexican States Five Pesos, struck in silver at the Mexico City Mint, as indicated by the “Mo” mint mark visible beneath the date. It was produced for circulation as a commemorative issue and is currently encapsulated in a protective holder.
The obverse bears the national arms of Mexico, depicting a left-facing eagle standing on a prickly pear cactus while grasping a serpent in its beak and talon. The surrounding legend reads “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.” Below the wreath are the inscriptions “LEY 0.720” at left and “PESO 27.7 G” at right, indicating the silver fineness and weight. The denomination “CINCO PESOS” appears below the central motif, with the date “1950” and the “Mo” mint mark placed beneath.
The reverse commemorates the inauguration of the Ferrocarril del Sureste (Southeastern Railroad). A steam locomotive is depicted advancing through a tropical landscape with palm trees, with a rising sun and radiating rays above. The date “1950” appears within the sun motif, and the surrounding legend reads “INAUGURACION DEL FERROCARRIL DEL SURESTE.”
Although an original mintage of 200,000 pieces was authorized, official records indicate that approximately 100,000 examples were later withdrawn and melted, with the recovered silver subsequently used for the 1968 Mexico City Olympic 25 Pesos coinage. As a result, the surviving population is materially reduced relative to the original production.
