1808 Bolivia Eight Reales – Silver, Charles IV
This is an 1808 Spanish colonial eight reales silver coin struck during the reign of King Charles IV for circulation in Upper Peru, present-day Bolivia. The obverse features a right-facing laureate bust of Charles IV with tied hair ribbon and draped bust, encircled by the legend CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA. The date 1808 appears below the truncation.
The reverse displays the crowned Spanish royal arms within a shield quartered with castles and lions, with a Bourbon inescutcheon of fleurs-de-lis at center. The shield is flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with bannered scrolls, and the surrounding legend reads HISPAN ET IND REX. No mint mark or assayer initials are clearly visible in the provided photographs; therefore, the specific mint attribution cannot be confirmed from the images alone.
This type represents the final year of eight reales coinage bearing the portrait of Charles IV, struck amid the political upheaval of 1808 that marked the end of his reign.
