1982 West African States 5000 Francs – Silver Commemorative
This is a 1982 West African States 5000 Francs silver commemorative coin issued by the Banque Centrale des États de l’Afrique de l’Ouest (BCEAO), intended as a non-circulating commemorative. The coin is denominated 5000 francs and struck in silver; no mint mark is visible on either side in the provided images.
The obverse depicts a stylized arrangement of six birds in a circular, interrelated formation resting on a stepped base. Surrounding the central motif is the legend “SOLIDARITÉ ET DE LA COHÉSION DE L’UNION MONÉTAIRE.” The names of the participating member states appear around the field: BENIN, CÔTE D’IVOIRE, HAUTE VOLTA, NIGER, SENEGAL, and TOGO. Below the central design is the denomination “5000 FRANCS,” with the date “1982” beneath.
The reverse features a stylized African mask with elongated facial elements and geometric symmetry. Encircling legends read “BANQUE CENTRALE DES ÉTATS DE L’AFRIQUE DE L’OUEST.” To the left of the mask are the inscriptions “1 NOVEMBRE 1962” and “1 NOVEMBRE 1982,” commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the West African Monetary Union.
Issued to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of the West African Monetary Union, this commemorative highlights unity and cooperation among the BCEAO member states.
