1944 Romania 500 Lei – Silver
This is a 1944 Kingdom of Romania silver 500 Lei coin issued for circulation under King Mihai I. No mint mark is visible on the obverse or reverse.
The obverse features a left-facing bust of King Mihai I. The surrounding legend reads MIHAI I REGELE ROMANILOR. Beneath the truncation of the portrait appears the engraver’s signature H. IONESCU. The design is enclosed by a beaded border.
The reverse displays the crowned national coat of arms of Romania, consisting of a central shield with quartered heraldic devices, flanked by draped mantling and surmounted by a royal crown. The inscription ROMANIA curves along the upper periphery. The denomination 500 LEI is placed at the bottom, with the date 1944 divided to the left and right of the coat of arms. A beaded border surrounds the reverse design.
This issue belongs to the final silver coinage of the First Leu monetary system, struck during the closing phase of the Second World War and the last year in which silver 500 Lei coins were produced for circulation under King Mihai I.
