1961 South Africa 50 Cents – Silver, First Decimal Issue
This is a 1961 South African 50 Cents silver coin issued for general circulation as part of the country’s first decimal coinage. The coin is struck in silver and bears no mint mark, as none was used on this issue.
The obverse displays a left-facing portrait of Jan van Riebeeck. Surrounding the portrait is the bilingual legend “EENDRAG MAAK MAG · UNITY IS STRENGTH,” separated by small floral ornaments, with a beaded border around the rim.
The reverse depicts a springbok antelope in mid-stride above stylized ground detail. The date “1961” appears at the top. The denomination “50c” is placed below the antelope, flanked by small floral symbols. The encircling legend reads “SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA.” No mint mark is present on the reverse.
Issued in 1961, this type marks South Africa’s transition from the pound system to the rand-based decimal currency and represents the inaugural year of the silver 50 Cents denomination.
