1961 Philippines One Peso – Rizal Centennial, Silver
This is a 1961 Republic of the Philippines One Peso silver commemorative coin issued for circulation to mark the centennial of the birth of José Rizal. No mint mark is visible on the obverse or reverse, as confirmed by the photographs.
The obverse features a left-facing bust of José Rizal at center. The surrounding legend reads “JOSE RIZAL • CENTENNIAL,” with the date “1861” to the left of the portrait and “1961” to the right. Below the bust appears the inscription “NATIONAL HERO.” A beaded border encloses the design around the rim.
The reverse displays the seal of the Central Bank of the Philippines. At center is a shield containing a stylized sun with rays and three stars above, with an eagle at lower left and a lion at lower right. Beneath the shield is a ribbon bearing the inscription “REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES.” The outer legend reads “CENTRAL BANK OF THE PHILIPPINES,” and the denomination “ONE PESO” appears at the bottom, flanked by small stars. No mint mark is present.
This commemorative peso was issued during the early period of the Central Bank of the Philippines and formed part of a silver coinage program honoring José Rizal, a central figure in Philippine national history.
