Description

1903 Straits Settlements One Dollar – Silver

This is a 1903 Straits Settlements One Dollar silver coin issued for circulation under British colonial administration. The obverse displays a right-facing bust of King Edward VII wearing the Imperial State Crown, with the surrounding legend reading “EDWARD VII KING AND EMPEROR.” The portrait truncation is plain, and no mint mark is visible on the obverse.

The reverse features an elaborate ornamental design composed of four lobed cartouches arranged around a central floral motif. Each cartouche contains inscriptions in different scripts, including Chinese characters and Jawi (Arabic-derived script), reflecting the multilingual commercial environment of the Straits Settlements. The encircling legend reads “STRAITS SETTLEMENTS,” with the denomination and date “ONE DOLLAR 1903” positioned at the bottom. No mint mark is present on the reverse.

Issued in 1903, this coin represents the introduction of the Straits Settlements dollar as a standardized silver currency intended to replace the wide variety of foreign silver dollars then circulating in the region. The type was struck to a high silver standard comparable to contemporary trade dollars, though subsequent issues would be modified as silver prices and monetary policy evolved in the early 20th century.
