1819 Spanish Empire 8 Reales – Silver
This coin is an 1819 Spanish Empire 8 Reales silver issue, struck for circulation under King Ferdinand VII at the Seville Mint, as indicated by the visible S mint mark on the reverse. The assayer initial J is also present, forming the mint-assayer combination S·J.
The obverse features a right-facing bust of King Ferdinand VII with draped shoulder and tied hair ribbon at the back of the head. The surrounding legend reads FERD·VII·DEI·GRATIA, with the date 1819 positioned below the bust. A denticulated border frames the obverse.
The reverse displays the crowned Spanish coat of arms, quartered with the castles of Castile and the lions of León, with an inescutcheon at center. The arms are flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, each wrapped with banners. A clear S mint mark is visible to the left of the shield, with the assayer initial J to the right. The surrounding legend reads HISPAN·ET·IND·REX. A denticulated border encloses the reverse.
This type represents the standard late Spanish mainland 8 Reales coinage of Ferdinand VII, produced following the restoration of royal authority after the Napoleonic period and intended for both domestic use and international trade.
