1964 United States Half Dollar – Silver, Kennedy Type
The coin is a 1964 United States half dollar struck in .900 fine silver for general circulation. No mint mark is present on the reverse, indicating production at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin is encapsulated.
The obverse depicts a left-facing bust of President John F. Kennedy, with the legend “LIBERTY” around the upper periphery. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is divided on either side of the portrait truncation, and the date “1964” appears below. The obverse design is attributed to sculptor Gilroy Roberts.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle adapted from the Great Seal of the United States, with wings spread and a shield on its breast. An olive branch is held in the eagle’s right talon and a bundle of arrows in the left. A scroll bearing the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arcs above the eagle. The surrounding legends read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “HALF DOLLAR.” No mint mark is present to the left of the tail feathers above the denomination. The reverse design is attributed to Frank Gasparro.
The Kennedy half dollar was introduced in 1964 as a memorial issue following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and was struck in 90% silver only during that inaugural year for circulation.
