Navajo Kingman Turquoise Nugget & Heishi Necklace, 1950s
This Navajo necklace dates to the 1950s and is composed of natural Kingman turquoise. It is constructed of substantial freeform turquoise nuggets, each selected for color and matrix, and spaced with rolled turquoise heishi beads that provide visual rhythm as well as structural balance.
The necklace comes from a New Mexico estate of fine Native American jewelry and reflects the stone-forward approach favored by Navajo artists in the mid-20th century, where emphasis was placed on material integrity and scale rather than metal ornamentation.
