Description

Lloyd Oliver Navajo Sterling Silver & Turquoise Statement Necklace

This statement necklace was created by Lloyd Oliver (Navajo, 1923–2011), a Navajo Codetalker who became a silversmith

Executed in sterling silver, the necklace features five fan-shaped pendants, each set with natural turquoise stones in a traditional Navajo bezel setting. Four pendants hold three turquoise stones each, while the central drop carries four—creating a rhythmic and grounded focal point. The stones vary in hue from robin’s egg blue to deeper blue-green, with visible matrix throughout, each accented by applied silver raindrops.

The pendants are strung on a single strand of handmade sterling silver bench beads, a labor-intensive technique. A traditional hook clasp completes the strand. The necklace retains its original patina.

On the reverse, the central pendant is hallmarked “Lo”—the documented signature of Lloyd Oliver.

This necklace comes from a fine private collection of Native American jewelry, and dates to the active period of Oliver’s silversmithing. With its striking materials and deeply rooted design language, the piece resonates as both adornment and cultural expression.

About the Artist:

Lloyd Oliver was born in Shiprock, New Mexico in 1923 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers—a group of elite Marines who developed a top-secret military code based on the Navajo language. This unbreakable code played a critical role in Allied communications during the Pacific campaign. After the war, Oliver returned to the Southwest and became a silversmith. His jewelry, like this necklace, carries the legacy of both his heritage and service, balancing cultural tradition with personal artistry.

Condition:

Good vintage condition. The piece retains its original oxidized patina and has not been polished. Turquoise stones are secure in their bezel settings with no visible cracks or chips. Surface wear and oxidation are consistent with age and gentle use. Clasp is fully functional and secure.
